What is a singing bowl and why would I need one?

A singing bowl is a standing bell that produces a relaxing sound when played. The sound it produces is very soothing to both mind and body. You can use a singing bowl to invoke a deep state of relaxation, enter into meditations, reduce stress, perform music therapy and assist in yoga. You can also be use them for performances and personal enjoyment, as well as a decorative piece, as they as beautiful instruments.

How do I use a singing bowl?

Playing a singing bowl is not a difficult task. Here’s how you can play one:

  1. Place the singing bowl upright lightly on your palm. Don’t clucth the singing bowl. If you prefer not to play it on hand, place a cushion ring on a flat surface. Avoid putting it directly on a flat hard surface.
  2. Take the pallet and gently strike it from the padded end, then immediately start softly circling the rim of the bowl. With some practice, you’ll be able to make the bowl sing in to time.

How do I choose a singing bowl?

Choosing a singing bowl is a matter of listening to the sound. There is no hard and fast rule to choose the “best” singing bowl, you do it by listening to the sound of each bowl, and choose the one you prefer. It is highly recommended to close your eyes and focus solely on your auditory senses. Don’t just hear the sound, feel it. Then you can easily choose the one that suits you best.

How does size make a difference?

Singing bowls are available in variety of sizes. The most important difference is the sound produced. Larger bowls usually produce a deep sound with low frequency. The smaller the bowls get, the more the frequency of sound increases. 

What is the difference between machine-made and hand-made bowls?

Hand-made bowls are made with traditional tools. The are shaped and designed manually, which gives them an irregular rim. They are heavier and produce deeper and longer sounds than machine-made bowls. They are also considered more authentic. Machine-made bowls have a bit shallower sound. However, since they are machine made, they are much more smoother and have a more consistent shape. Thus, they look better as a decorative piece. 

How do I take care of my singing bowls?

 Singing bowls may be made of metal, but that does not mean they don’t need caring. They may not be fragile in terms of breakage, but they can get damaged. Most importantly, the sound of a singing bowl may degrade, if not taken care of. Here are a few ways you can take care of them:

  1. Use a soft cloth to wipe it after every use.
  2. You can use white vinegar to remove fingerprints.
  3. Don’t store any liquid in it. If you put water in it, make sure to clear it and wipe it dry after use.
  4. Don’t put any sharp objects inside. You don’t want your bowl to get unnecessarily scratched.
  5. Always keep it upright, and rest it on the soft cushion ring to prevent it from getting stratches or rolling around.
  6. Try not to stack them, and if you have to, make sure to not get them stuck.
